It was built by the famous Portuguese sailor, Tristão da Cunha in the end of the 16th Century and is one of the few remaining buildings that resisted the 1755 earthquake, that destroyed the entire city.
The palace has the biggest private colection of Portuguese Panels. It was in this Palace, that a group of Portuguese Nobles, deeply unhappy with the Spanish government (1580-1640) started a conspiracy to restore the independence. This secret meetings succeeded, when in 1640, D. João, Duke of Bragança, was acclaimed King of Portugal.
In the 18th Century, Pedro da Cunha, the 2nd Count of Castro Marim and 1st of Olhão, did an important and deep renovation work on the palace at the hands of some of the most prestigious artist in Europe, which turned the Palace into a private and exclusive art collection.
The palace was considered in 1987, a National Monument. This Palace is also one of the few properties in Portugal that has remained in the same family for over 500 years.
