At the old Lisbon Quarter of Graça, right next to the São Vicente de Fora Monastery, it is located an old Palace, built over a medieval wall. The Palace was built in 1606, under the order of D. Diogo Soares, Portugal’s Counsil Secretary, in Madrid. On the 19th century, the Palace lived its most important period, when the owner D. Mariana de Noronha opned the Palace to the noble and intelectual elite of the time. It belonged to the Teles de Meneses family from 1734 until the beginning of the 20th century.
In 1906, the Palace was sold to Alfredo da Cunha, the director of the “Diária de Notícias” journal, who underwent important reconstruction works inside the Palace and added an extensive tiles collection from different periods in History. Today it has one of the most important tiles collection in Lisbon.
The renewed Palace brings the highest society to its parties, music and theatre soirées and poetry readings. The most important poets and writers were frequent visits in the Palace. After a family scandal and subsequent years of abandon, the current owners restored the Palace, giving back its former magnificence and keeping the original features.
