At 220 years old, there are few restaurants anywhere with a history as rich as that of Tavares. This is the oldest restaurant in Lisbon, inaugurated in 1784 by the Italian Nicolau Massa. In 1823, management passed into the hands of the Tavares brothers, who renovated it and changed its name. More recently, it was acquired by José Pereira dos Santos, a lawyer from Leiria, who restored it to its original splendour. Whilst the dining room has been restored to its former glory, the menu has moved well and truly into the new century with modern gourmet cuisine and service to match. |
